Children’s Dentistry
at Melbourne St Dental Studio

At Melbourne St Dental Studio, one of our greatest passions is helping kids of all ages enjoy optimal oral health and bright, healthy smiles. We understand that visiting the dentist can make some kids (and mums and dads!) feel anxious.

Our approach to children’s dentistry isn’t just about treating teeth; we aim to nurture healthy smiles from an early age.

NEW PATIENTS

It’s All About Timing

Children’s dentistry requires a bit more patience and time. Kids need extra time during visits to become comfortable and understand what’s happening. However, once it’s time for a procedure, efficiency is key to keeping their attention and minimising anxiety. This balance ensures a positive experience for both children and their parents or guardians.

What We Offer

We provide a broad array of dental services and always seek to make them affordable and comfortable. Services include regular checkups, preventative treatments like fissure sealants and emergency care. We’re especially mindful of the developmental stages of primary and secondary teeth, ensuring timely interventions to prevent future dental issues.

Early Visits and Orthodontic Insights

Our orthodontic background helps us identify and address potential myofunctional problems early on, promoting healthy facial development. Regular screenings, including OPG (Orthopantomogram) scans, are crucial for spotting jaw development and tooth positioning issues.

What Young Kids Can Expect – First Visit

During this visit, young children will get familiarised with our friendly dental environment, see the dental chair and equipment and learn how everything works. The dentist will ask your child to open their mouth and then will:

  • Count their teeth
  • Check for cavities and any soft tissue concerns
  • Assess cleaning habits to see how well they’re cleaning
  • Inspect their occlusion & bite to identify maldevelopment
  • Check airways
  • Take X-rays when possible to identify any decay

We also provide educational materials on brushing basics.

We Accept the CDBS

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is available for eligible children aged 2 to 17 years. The program covers a range of services, including examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals, and extractions. To be eligible, families must receive certain government benefits, such as the Family Tax Benefit Part A, for at least part of the calendar year.

The CDBS provides up to $1,026 over two consecutive calendar years for each eligible child to receive dental services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can parents help their kids prepare for a dental visit?

One of the best ways to ensure your little one has a stress-free visit to our practice is by using positive language, letting your child know that the visit will include a simple checkup or tooth count and that the dentist will ensure the child has no cavities. Avoid saying things like, “It won’t hurt,” which can be alarming to a child.

Do you offer sleep dentistry or sedation for kids?

No, but we can refer your child to a specialist if needed.

How many times should a child go to the dentist?

We recommend every six months, starting from around the age of 2.

How many teeth can erupt in babies?

It depends. Some children can have teeth at a few months of age, and some can have teeth in the lower mouth when they are born. The first ones to come through are the lower incisors which can erupt at about six to 10 months. And then the next ones to come through are the upper incisors, which erupt at about eight to 12 months.

What age should a kid go to the dentist for the first time?

We recommend starting dental visits by age 2 to familiarise children with the dental environment.
